Meet Mayra

Mayra is not a career politician. She’s a mother, a neighbor, and a fighter who believes in putting people over politics. She’s running for Congress because she believes the Lowcountry deserves a representative who listens, leads with compassion, and fights for bold, transformative change — not just partisan soundbites.
Growing up in a lower middle-class household in the heart of Puerto Rico, Mayra watched her parents nurture their community. Whether it was her mother’s cooking and generosity that made their home a gathering place, or her father who motivated citizens to take political action, Mayra was inspired to work hard, to serve, and to take action. Mayra is a first-generation college graduate, having earned a bachelor’s in economics, a juris doctor in law, and a master’s degree in international law, foreign trade, and international relations.
While her husband was in active duty service with the U.S. Army, Mayra utilized her knowledge of the law and her bilingual skills to serve fellow service members and their families during times of deployment and in family matters. And in Puerto Rico, she became well known as a trusted political adviser to government institutions and elected officials.
In South Carolina, Mayra has worked as a community organizer, nonprofit adviser, and legal assistant at an immigration law firm. She has traveled across the state, building coalitions in rural towns and urban centers, championing reproductive rights, environmental justice, affordable health care, and public education. As a Democratic Party leader in Beaufort County, as well as with the state party, Mayra has led grassroots voter registration drives, supported political candidates, and stood up for citizens in every corner of the state.
Mayra understands what it’s like to struggle. As the mother of two adult children, including an autistic son, she personally knows what it’s like to navigate school systems and support services that don’t always include everyone. As a Latina, she personally knows what it’s like to be underestimated. With her background in economics, law, and trade, Mayra personally understands the opportunities and potential the Lowcountry holds. And finally, as the daughter of a family who knows what it’s like to struggle, Mayra personally knows that it’s difficult to worry about partisan politics when there isn’t enough food in the pantry.
Mayra is here to fight for all of us. Her campaign is powered by working families, young people, veterans, and everyday South Carolinians who are ready to build a future rooted in justice, opportunity, and dignity for all.
