The Issues

The Economy
Mayra recognizes the wealth and opportunity the district has to offer. As an economist, Mayra has worked in roles that have brought in federal money to benefit people’s lives. For too long, Republican representation in the district has fought against the progress that all South Carolinians need, such as infrastructure improvements that attract good-paying jobs. The Lowcountry needs someone who will fight for working families and invest in pockets of the district that have long been ignored. When elected, Mayra will fight for fair wages, protect jobs, and champion the Lowcountry as a welcoming place for global business.
Affordability
Mayra knows what it’s like to work hard and still struggle. The American Dream is becoming more difficult to achieve for all generations as everyday household staples, childcare, and rent become more expensive. Mayra will advocate for fair trade practices, fight to protect Social Security, eliminate tax breaks for the rich and push for solutions to our housing crisis.

Healthcare
Mayra knows firsthand what it’s like to advocate for quality health care. As the mother of a nonverbal autistic child, she and her family have had to navigate a system that doesn’t work for everyone. And with the current administration’s policies, health care coverage for every American is at risk with doctors fleeing the state, rural hospitals closing, prescription drug prices skyrocketing, women losing basic reproductive rights, and veterans struggling to access services they deserve. This proud wife of an Army veteran isn’t going to stand by and allow South Carolinians to be shortchanged. Mayra will stand up for all of us.
Education
Mayra is the proud mother of two children and a young grandson. She understands that a child’s access to education will unlock their potential. If the United States wants the next generation to have a world-class education, and put us back on top with student achievement rates, then we need to invest in all of our children. That means fully funding universal pre-K for our youngest, protecting free breakfast and lunch programs for students, and pumping more federal dollars into universities, HBCUs and technical colleges – not taking money away to win political points – to make tuition more affordable and re-open grant funding and scientific research.

The Environment
The Lowcountry’s beauty and charm is what makes it the jewel of the south. It drives our tourism and makes it an attractive place to live and explore. But explosive growth and poor infrastructure planning have caused a strain, and it’s put the land at risk. Disastrous flooding episodes have put a chokehold on our local economy and endangered homeowners. Mayra knows what it takes to bring all stakeholders together to make sure plans are streamlined to make our communities more resilient. She also knows the importance of protecting our waters from offshore drilling. She will fight to protect the beauty of the Lowcountry.
Immigration
Mayra believes it’s bad business to terrorize communities. She will fight for common-sense immigration reform that makes sense for businesses and families while advocating for strong borders. The current administration’s policies have created more problems than solutions, inviting chaos into our economy and a brain drain of creative innovation, and Congress has done nothing to offer solutions – only invoking fear and chaos. The United States was founded by immigrants, and our differences and diversity make us stronger.
